Physalis minima

Physalis minima, also known as small groundcherry or small hogplum, is a perennial herb in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is native to North America and can be found growing in a variety of habitats, including fields, pastures, and roadsides. The small, tubular flowers are yellow or orange-yellow and bloom in late summer to fall, producing small, orange or yellow berry-like fruits that are about 1 cm in diameter. These fruits are edible but not commonly consumed due to their small size and sour taste.

The plant has a low-growing habit, reaching a height of around 30 cm. The leaves are small, oval shaped and have a hairy texture. P. minima is considered a weed in some areas because of its ability to quickly spread and become invasive. It is often found growing in fields, pastures, and along roadsides and can outcompete native plants for resources.

P. minima has a wide range of traditional medicinal uses among indigenous people of North America. It has been used to treat a wide range of ailments including stomach complaints, respiratory infections, and skin problems. However, the plant is not recommended for internal consumption as it contains small amounts of solanine, which can be toxic in large doses.

Despite its potential negative impact as an invasive species and its toxic content, P. minima is also known for its ornamental value. It can be grown in gardens and as a container plant.
