Is a Secondary RO System Necessary for Fenaka Water? A Guide for Maldivian Homes

provides reliable, treated, and desalinated water straight to household taps. Because this water already
undergoes municipal treatment and desalination, a common question among homeowners is whether it
is truly necessary to install an additional domestic reverse osmosis (RO) system, and what health effects
come from drinking heavily demineralized water.
The Technical Reality: Why a Second RO is Usually Unnecessary
Because Fenaka water is already treated and desalinated at utility-scale plants, its incoming Total
Dissolved Solids (TDS) level is naturally low—typically resting between 50 and 200 ppm. Running water with an already-low TDS through a secondary, high-pressure RO membrane is largely redundant because there are minimal dissolved salts left to extract.
Municipal networks also maintain safe distribution by dosing chlorine. While an RO membrane strips
this out, simpler and more efficient alternatives—such as an under-sink carbon block filter or a multi-
stage sediment-and-carbon filter—can easily remove residual chlorine tastes and fine pipe rust without
the high water-wastage rates and constant filter-replacement overhead of an RO unit. For everyday
household use, basic carbon polishing is more than sufficient.
The Health Concerns of Drinking Dual-RO; Water
When water passes through multiple stages of reverse osmosis—first at the municipal level and a
second time at home—it creates heavily demineralized water. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO) guidelines and nutritional evaluations, long-term consumption of completely demineralized
water presents several key considerations:
- Deprivation of Essential Minerals: Natural drinking water contains trace amounts of calcium and magnesium that contribute to daily intake. Dual-RO water strips these ions out entirely, leaving water completely bare of minerals.
- Electrolyte Balance and Cellular Hydration: Water stripped of all dissolved solids lacks the osmotic balance optimal for cellular hydration, and prolonged consumption has been linked in some studies to potential electrolyte leaching during heavy perspiration.
- Aggressive Acidity and Plumbing Leaching: Removing natural bicarbonate buffers lowers water pH, rendering it slightly acidic. This aggressive low-mineral water can easily leach metals like copper, lead, or zinc out of internal household plumbing if water sits stagnant.
Smart Solutions for Island Homes

mitigate these issues:
- Add a Remineralization Filter: Ensure your system features an alkaline or remineralization post-filter as its final stage to restore healthy trace minerals, balance pH levels, and dramatically improve water taste.
- Consider Carbon and UV Systems Instead: If you are setting up new filtration, a high-grade carbon block and UV setup preserves the natural mineral profile of your municipal water while removing aesthetic impurities.
